Nashua River Rail Trail, Groton, MA
The Nashua River Rail Trail is a biking and walking trail that goes from Ayer, MA to Nashua, NH. It's a family -friendly trail that gains little elevation and is less crowded than the Minuteman Trail.
End-to-end, the ride is 11 miles. It's an ambitious ride for families with younger children, so be sure to pack plenty of snacks and water.
Along the way, you will pass the Nashua River, wetlands, and tranquil forests. If your group is quiet enough, you can watch birds, see beavers build, and spot an occasional deer.
You also navigate across the busy intersection in Pepperell, MA. Be sure to bring your money and stop for ice cream at the Rail Trail Ice Cream Shop, located just across from the trail in Pepperell Center. It may just be the perfect bribe to get your kids to finish the ride.
Weekends are busy, but not so crowded that it is a frustrating experience. Our favorite time to ride is a weekday afternoon in the afterschool hours.
Parking is in Ayer Center, Groton (Station Ave), or Sand Hill Road in Groton.
Plan for approximately two-three hours to bike from Groton to Nashua and back if traveling with kids.
