Hiking with Children in the Badlands, Badlands National Park

Indescribable.

It's impossible to find the words to explain what the Badlands look like.  Giant rock formations grow out of the prairies for miles.  We were expecting a few landforms. What we have found is a sea of mountainous geological features that you can easily get lost in.

The French fur trappers named the Badlands because it was a bad land to cross.  Driving through is difficult because of the swerves and curves in the road and the steep canyons and drop-offs alongside the road.

We were up early and at the National Park's Visitor Center by 8 am.  We completed two hikes: Door Trail and Notch Trail.  By 9 am, it was very hot.  We climbed along rock formations and into small crevices in an endless sea of gray dirt.  Erosion causes this geological wonder.  With every drop of water, the land changes shape.

Door Trail was a lot of fun. It was easy to do, and you could go on forever.
Notch Trail was more difficult. With rugged terrain, dangerous cliffs, and steep climbs, this trail is not for wimps.  Only Mountain Goats may climb.  At one point, climbers must ascend a wooden and cable ladder.  The views at the top are breath-taking and the feeling of accomplishment makes the climb worth it.

Water is an absolute must in the Badlands.  We each drank about two water bottles in our two and a half hours out there, and we're still rehydrating now.

We are staying at the KOA--Interior.  What a great spot to stay. The campground is ultra clean with immaculate bathrooms.  The sites are almost all pull-through with plenty of space, but not much privacy. There is a small playground and a much-needed inground pool and kiddie pool.  There is a snack bar that serves Indian Tacos and Pancakes.  The store is well-stocked, and the manager, Jane, is ultra-friendly and helpful.  The best part of all is that there is some shady tree-cover.

Heading out to see some wildlife later this afternoon, followed by sunset at the lookout point and a talk on nocturnal animals by a Park Ranger.

This place is amazing!
