Lowell Spinners Baseball Game, Lowell, MA
Over the years, we have logged a lot of hours at the NH Fisher Cats games in Manchester, but haven't had the opportunity to go to a Lowell Spinners game until now.
I
first was introduced in-depth to the Spinners back in 2006 when I
interviewed Jon Goode, the Director of Corporate Communications for the
Merrimack College Alumni Magazine. Goode, a Merrimack Alum, was being
recognized for his work with the club and his charity work with C-Squared Mission, an organization that he and his wife founded to benefit people with Cerebral Palsy and Cystic Fibrosis.
Living
up in NH, we never ventured close enough to Lowell for a Spinners game,
but now that they are practically in our backyard, we got tickets as a
way to celebrate Derek's birthday.
What
I love most about minor league ball games is that it's not just about
baseball. In between every inning, there are things to entertain the
crowd. Games, contests, trivia, and entertainment all keep the pace of
the game moving quickly.
The
stadium itself, LaLacheur Park, is amazing. A giant shirt, with
Jonathan Papelbon's number on the back, greets visitors. A new stadium,
there is not a bad seat in the house. The arena is clean, there are
plenty of vendors, and there is a Kids area with bouncy houses.
Concession prices are relatively reasonable (if you can call $2.50 for a
bottle of water reasonable), but compared to Fenway, they are a
bargain.
Players
hang around before the game, signing autographs for young fans. This
interaction with the children impressed this teacher and mom.
Even
though it rained, we had a good time. We narrowly escaped a major
thunderstorm that went just north of us. Towards the end, we could see
Dracut's fireworks across the river.
On the way out, the Alligator Mascots waited to hug and pose for pictures with the kids.
The Scooby Doo Mystery Machine and Herbie the Love Bug were also parked outside the stadium.
I think the Spinners won. But, I do know that the kids had fun!
